PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Canada has implemented an online system to process certain economic class applications using Express Entry. The advantage of using Express Entry is faster processing time than non-Express Entry applications. The average processing time from the submission date of a complete application is six months.

TEMPORARY RESIDENCE

Many foreign nationals initially come to Canada on Temporary Resident Visas to work, study, visit family or friends or for tourism. The visa is typically issued at a Canadian mission serving your country of residence. The validity of the visa can be for a few days or up to a few years, depending on the reasons for your travel and your ability to support yourself while in Canada. It is often possible to extend a Canadian visa once inside Canada.

Work Permit

There are many ways for a foreign national to work in Canada, and this can serve as a pathway to permanent residence.   A Work Permit can be “open” or “closed.” An Open Work Permit allows the foreign worker to work in any job and for any employer with few restrictions. A Closed Work Permit restricts the foreign worker to either a specific employer or a specific job.   Open Work Permits never require an LMIA. Closed Work Permits may require an LMIA.

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to employers who demonstrate that they cannot find qualified Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents to fill positions.

Study Permit

Canada is a top destination for foreign nationals seeking high-quality, globally recognized education. A study permit can also provide a pathway to permanent residence. Many programs of study allow students to work part-time during their studies and full-time during breaks.

Students may also obtain a Post Graduation Work Permit upon completion of their program, thereby allowing them to obtain Canadian work experience that can be used to support their application for permanent residence.

Under certain conditions, spouses and common-law partners of international students may apply for Spousal Open Work Permits, allowing them to work in Canada for the duration of their spouse’s study permit. The spouse’s work experience may also be used to support an application for permanent residence.

Visitors Visa

Canada welcomes many foreign nationals each year who wish to visit their families and friends or for tourism. Unless you come from one of the visa-exempt countries, you will require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter the country.

The TRV is an official document issued by a visa office and placed on your passport. Unless otherwise indicated by an officer at the Canadian port of entry, the standard amount of time granted for admission for a visitor is six months.
